Claymont History
Claymont subdivision was the first of its kind in this area and dates back to 1960 with the first houses being built along Clayton Road near the intersection of Claymont Drive. The last houses were built in late 1966 and early 1967 along Baxter Road near the intersection of Claymont Drive. In the early marketing of the subdivision it was referred to as Claymont on Clayton Road. This is because the area was considered to be rural but people living east of Ballas Road (Interstate 270 didn’t exist yet) knew Clayton Road. It ran all the way to St Louis city through Clayton, the county seat of St. Louis County. It was marketed as “only being 8 miles west of Ballas Road”. Claymont is the largest subdivision in Ballwin covering 310 acres with 665 homes. This is some of the historical information we have managed to hang on to over the years and some provided by residents, we hope you enjoy it.
The Land Before Claymont
View of Claymont Subdivision as rural pasture land sometime in the late 1950’s. The view is from above Meadowbrook golf course looking southeast with the house in the lower right being 15182 Clayton Road which was built in 1953. Claymont elementary school was built on the old barn site in 1962-1963, and opened in the fall of 1963.
1960 Plat Map
This is an early plat map of Claymont Subdivision showing Plats 1 through 4 and the future school site and potential church sites. In the lower right CA 7-5850 is the phone number for Mayer Raisher Mayer who was the developer of Claymont. The field office phone was on the CApitol exchange and CA represented 22 on the dial pad hence this area would later have a 227 prefix.
Claymont Bath & Tennis Club Membership Brochure
The Claymont Bath & Tennis Club was a separate entity from Claymont Subdivision but was integral to its success. Claymont was the first subdivision in this area and generally surrounded by farms and pasture land. When Claymont Bath & Tennis Club opened their doors on June 1, 1961 there was nothing like it for miles. It and Claymont Subdivision really started the westward expansion of west St. Louis county in this area. They were drawing in corporate workers and executives from such companies as Monsanto, AT&T (Bell Telephone), Mallinckrodt and others who were looking for the ideal suburban lifestyle of the early 1960’s. The Claymont Bath & Tennis Club served the community until the fall of 1995 when the club announced that it would close at the end of the year.
